What Does all the Jargon Mean?

When people have been around computers and the internet for a while, they start using new words which mean absolutely nothing to someone who's never even turned a computer on.

If you're not sure of a term you've heard somewhere, contact us on our handy form and we'll get a personal reply back to you within one working day.

But check out this chart first . . . it explains a few of the common terms.

JARGON
WHAT IT MEANS
Web Browser
The program most people use to browse the internet, checking out websites.
Email
Sending an electronic 'letter' which normally arrives almost instantly at its destination, is free to send, doesn't need a postage stamp, and – - if you got the address correct – - never ends up in the Dead Letter Office.
Web-based email
Allows the website users to check their email from anywhere in the world
Disk space
All websites ultimately exist on hard disk drives, on computers, somewhere. Disk space is how much space is available for the website, on the hard disk drive of the computer it's hosted on.
FTP

When you or the person making or maintaining your website needs to add or delete something to your website, they use FTP.

Short for File Transfer Protocol, it’s a small software application which allows you to copy files to and from your website. You can also share files from your site with others by allowing them to access parts of your site “anonymously”

Webstats
Webstats allow the website owner to see who’s been to their site, where they were from, what pages they visited, what browser they were using etc. It helps them with their marketing and customer targeting, if that's what they are interested in.
Frontpage extensions
Microsoft sells a real easy-to-use website building program called MS Frontpage. It requires certain files to be available on a website. They are called Frontpage extensions.
Control Panel
The place where the website owner or the owner's webmaster  makes additions and adjustments to his website eg email accounts, users, databases etc
Chat and Bulletin Board software
Allows a website to have instant chatting and discussion groups, often called forums, on the site
Gallery software
Allows the website owner to arrange images for visitors to see.
e-Commerce enabled
Ready to accept e-commerce software like OsCommerce or Miva
Server
The computer where your website lives. Normally provided by specialist hosting companies like Hostwey.
Bandwidth
Every time something happens on the web, small packets of information travel between your computer and the website. They add up, and over a month can mount up to a number of megabytes. or even gigabytes. How much each month called the bandwidth.
